We’re excited to announce two new speakers participating in the 2016 ACA@UBC Seminar & Symposium on Preserving Liquid Communication: Patricia Klambauer, Digital Capacity, Evaluation and Acquisitions Branch, Library and Archives Canada and Jenny Wang, School of Information Resource Management, Renmin University of China.

The three-day Seminar & Symposium, taking place at UBC from February 10 to 12, 2016, will address fast-growing issues around the preservation of informal communications in cloud environments generated through the use of social media. Early bird registration ends tomorrow so reserve your place at the ACA@UBC Seminar and Symposium now! Until January 15: professionals pay only $35 to attend all events; students pay $10 (this includes lunch at the Symposium). Professionals who sign up on January 16 or later pay $45, while students continue to pay $10. Click here to register now!

Our 8th annual Seminar and Symposium, held on February 10-12, 2016 at the University of British Columbia. The theme of this year’s event is “Preserving Liquid Communication,” with a focus on the preservation of informal communications generated in cloud environments through the use of social media. Speakers will discuss these matters informally with attending professionals, students, and professors at the Seminar on February 10 and 11 (10:00am-4:00pm). The Symposium, featuring formal presentations from speakers, will be held on February 12 (9:00am-5:00pm).

8 experts who will participate in the Seminar and give the following presentations at the Symposium:

  • Amelia Acker, University of Pittsburgh: “Mobile Records, Social Media, and Recent Trends in Records Destruction”
  • Greg Bak, University of Manitoba: Constructing Ephemerality: The Bitstream and the Cloud
  • Babak Hamidzadeh, University of Maryland: “What Can and Should Be Preserved in Social Media Communications and How”
  • Peter Meiszner and Houston White, UBC Public Affairs Office: Digital and Social Media at UBC Public Affairs
  • Staff from Library and Archives Canada: “Web Archiving and the National Archival Collection: Capturing the Everyday Record”
  • Erin O’Meara, Gates Archive: “No More Waiting for Godot: Archival Practice in the Age of Social Media and Hosted Platforms”
  • Kate Theimer, ArchivesNext.com: “Gaps in the Past and Gaps in the Future: Archival Silences and Social Media”

SLA Panel, Convergence: Information Professionals in Libraries and Archives

Next Wednesday, January 20, our friends at UBC’s Special Libraries Association (SLA) student group is hosting a panel titled “Convergence: Information Professionals in Libraries and Archives”. The time is 11:00am-12:30pm (panel begins at 11:30am) in Rm. 301 – Lillooet Room, Irving K. Barber Centre, UBC. Panelists include former SLAIS MAS students.

●      Taryn Day is the Sample Librarian and Archivist for lululemon athletica, an international athletic apparel company founded in Vancouver.
●      Bronwyn Guiton is a Research Librarian at Lawson Lundell LLP, a 3-person law firm library in downtown Vancouver, and President-Elect of the SLA Western Canada Chapter.
●      Carolyn Soltau is a Research Librarian with The Province and Vancouver Sun, a contract Reference Librarian at Douglas College and Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and Vancouver Director of the SLA Western Canada Chapter.
●      Kristy Waller is a Media Archivist at the Western Front, an artist-run centre, and a part-time auxiliary archivist at the City of Vancouver Archives.
●      Jana Buhlmann is a Senior Project Archivist at Libraries and Archives Canada (LAC), a federal institution that acquires, preserves and makes Canada’s documentary heritage accessible.

Find out more about special libraries and archives, ask general questions about the panelists’ roles within their organizations, and discuss the differences between their roles as librarians and/or archivists. Lunch and refreshments will be served. Please register here before 3pm, Monday, January 18th.
