Symposium Title: “A Human Network: The Canadian Archival System”

Symposium Abstract: In Canada, we speak of the “Canadian Archival System” – it is a routine expression within our community, however those just embarking on their professional education may be unaware of its use in the Canadian context. The archival system is a complex whole, with shared functions, and the members of the system share a set of principles. What affects one part, affects the whole. The last several years have been a time of advances, struggle and change for the Canadian Archival System: the success of new open source technologies, cancellation of a federal funding program, changes in institutional leadership, an effective national discussion forum, increased outreach and advocacy, and calls for collaboration. Today, we set the course for the next 5, 10, 20 years and beyond, in our mission to preserve and make accessible Canada’s documentary heritage, for our sponsoring bodies, for our knowledge economy, and for Canadians. With regards to the ACA@UBC theme, this panel presentation will consider the Canadian Archival System, its history, complexity and extent, with an emphasis on the diverse workforce that is and will be necessary to support a sustainable archival system.
